Applications of cellular manufacturing may be used to illustrate the potential of intelligent manufacturing. Cellular manufacturing is the opposite of distributed manufacturing. In cellular manufacturing, resources are built by human designers in the most optimal way. It is the opposite of distributed manufacturing, where developing resources are left for manufacturers to develop. This difference is intended to allow manufacturers to more rapidly develop intelligent manufacturing systems and thereby shorten the product development cycle.
