Plot
The film begins with Saamiya Siddiqui, a Pakistani human-rights lawyer, who is given the case of Veer Pratap Singh, an Indian prisoner who has been held in Pakistan for 22 years without uttering a word. She meets Veer in his cell and tries to persuade him to speak. She tells him that she knows his name from his diary, which was found along with him when he was captured. She reads some excerpts from the diary and asks him to narrate his story.
Veer then recalls his past: He was a rescue pilot with the Indian Air Force, who once rescued Zaara, a Pakistani girl who had come to India to scatter the ashes of her surrogate mother in the river. Zaara was engaged to Raza Shirazi, a Pakistani politician's son, but she felt no love for him. Veer offered to take her to the river and they spent a day together in his native village along with his uncle Chaudhary Sumer Singh and aunt Saraswati Kaur. Veer and Zaara fell in love with each other, but Zaara had to return to Pakistan for her wedding.
Veer decided to go to Pakistan to confess his love to Zaara and ask her to elope with him. However, he was caught by Zaara's fiancƩ Raza and his father Jahangir Hayaat Khan, who were enraged by Veer's audacity. They framed him for being an Indian spy and tortured him for information. Zaara pleaded with them to spare Veer's life, but they refused to listen. Zaara's mother Mariam Hayaat Khan secretly contacted Veer's uncle Chaudhary Sumer Singh and told him about Veer's plight. She also told him that she had arranged for Zaara's escape from Pakistan with the help of her friend Shabbo and that Zaara was waiting for him at the Wagah border.
Chaudhary Sumer Singh rushed to the border with his lawyer friend Zakir Ahmed and met Zaara there. He told her that Veer had been killed in prison and gave her Veer's belongings, including his diary. He also told her that Veer had named her as his wife in his will and that she was now the owner of his ancestral house and lands in India. He asked her to come with him to India and live as Veer's widow. Zaara agreed to do so out of respect for Veer's love and sacrifice.
Back in the present, Saamiya is moved by Veer's story and vows to free him from prison. She faces many obstacles from the Pakistani authorities and Raza Shirazi, who is now a powerful politician. She also learns that Zaara is still alive and living in Veer's village in India as his widow. She contacts Zaara and tells her that Veer is alive and needs her help. Zaara is overjoyed and travels to Pakistan with Chaudhary Sumer Singh and Saraswati Kaur.
In the court, Saamiya presents Zaara as Veer's wife and exposes the conspiracy of Raza and Jahangir. She also reveals that Veer had remained silent for 22 years because he had promised Zaara that he would never speak to anyone else. The judge is impressed by Veer's loyalty and acquits him of all charges. Veer and Zaara are reunited after 22 years and return to India with Saamiya, Chaudhary Sumer Singh and Saraswati Kaur. The film ends with Veer and Zaara lighting a candle at the grave of Zaara's surrogate mother, who had prayed for their union.
